UK tribunal considers 250m crypto class action claim

LONDON / Cryptowire  / – A £250 million crypto class action filed in the United Kingdom Competition Appeal Tribunal has formally collected more than 2,700 registered claimants as proceedings move forward against major digital asset trading platforms. The collective lawsuit alleges that leading cryptocurrency exchanges engaged in anti-competitive conduct by colluding to delist the Bitcoin Satoshi Vision cryptocurrency from their respective platforms in April 2019. The legal proceedings represent one of the largest competition claims within the digital asset sector in Europe. The claim seeks financial compensation for affected investor holders who suffered severe economic losses following the coordinated removal of the token from major secondary market venues across the global digital currency ecosystem.

The legal challenge names several prominent digital asset exchanges, including Binance, Kraken operator Payward UK Limited, Bithumb, and ShapeShift, as primary defendants in the dispute. Claimants allege that the synchronized actions of these trading venues reduced market liquidity, depressed trading volumes, and caused the market capitalization of the asset to contract substantially within days of the announcements. The proceedings are brought under the UK Competition Act 1998, which prohibits agreements or concerted practices that prevent, restrict, or distort competition within the domestic market. The claimants assert that the coordinated delisting decisions directly breached statutory competition frameworks.

The class action is spearheaded by BSV Claims Limited, a special purpose entity established to represent the interests of affected retail and institutional asset holders. Former UK Office of Communications chief executive Lord David Currie serves as the representative claimant directing the litigation strategy on behalf of the registered class members. The litigation is funded by third-party litigation finance firm Litigation Capital Management, which provides the necessary financial backing to cover tribunal fees, expert economic assessments, and complex legal costs throughout the protracted litigation process in the tribunal.

Legal Action Targets Delisting Practices Across Major Exchanges

Legal representation for the claimant group is being managed by London-based litigation law firm Velitor Law, with managing partner Seamus Andrew leading the legal counsel team. According to court filings submitted to the Competition Appeal Tribunal, the claimants maintain that the exchange operators held significant combined market power at the time of the delisting events. The legal filings document how the exchange operators simultaneously published notices terminating trading pairs for the token, which effectively cut off millions of retail trading accounts from accessible market depth and standard order execution facilities.

The ongoing crypto class action emphasizes that the combined actions of the defendant exchanges created an artificial market environment that harmed ordinary consumers who held the affected token. Tribunal documents show that registered claimants include individual retail investors alongside corporate entities that maintained treasury allocations in the digital currency prior to April 2019. The lawsuit requests damages calculated based on the lost value of the holdings, prospective investment growth, and opportunity costs resulting from the reduced market accessibility. The defendant exchanges have filed preliminary responses denying liability and challenging the legal basis of the competition claims brought before the tribunal.

Primary Defendant Exchanges Named in Legal Filings

The case comes as judicial bodies across Europe increase regulatory scrutiny on digital asset trading venues, market structure, and platform operator conduct. The Financial Conduct Authority and foreign market regulators have continuously examined exchange operations, focusing on consumer protection, asset listing standards, and market integrity rules. The legal outcome before the Competition Appeal Tribunal is anticipated to establish critical legal precedents regarding exchange operator liability, collective redress mechanisms, and competition law enforcement within emerging financial technology markets and decentralized digital asset structures across the United Kingdom.

With 2,700 claimants officially registered, the special purpose vehicle continues to administer claimant verification and maintain document submissions for review by the judicial panel. The Competition Appeal Tribunal has scheduled upcoming procedural hearings to address case management directions, expert witness qualifications, and preliminary disclosure applications from both legal teams. The total quantum claimed remains capped at £250 million as the panel reviews financial methodology models submitted by independent economic consultants retained by the legal representatives. The trial phase will determine whether the exchange delistings constituted a prohibited anti-competitive agreement under United Kingdom competition law.
